Gryphon

Gryphons ((there are other spellings; I prefer this one)) are quite large creatures with the body of a lion and the head of an eagle. They are any colour on the brown scheme from black to pale tawny gold. (There are no white gryphons.) They are fierce fighters and have quick tempers, and are inherently good. They are very slow to trust, especially to trust Men and Dwarves. They are clever, excellent fighters, and loyal allies. They live in the mountain forests and occasionally the grassy plains.
