There was always something a little eerie about the preserve. Even in broad daylight, the sunlight that filtered down dim and green through the thick trees and the soft sounds of unseen creatures filled the air with a soft rustling. The path was little more than a trace of a track through the underbrush, and the thick moss deadened Jasper's footsteps, but the encroaching bushes rustled with each step. He tried to remember why, exactly, he was trecking through his favourite secluded places with his paranoid roommate tagging along behind. He was pretty convinced by now that the kid had some kind of bipolar disorder or something. Some days he was the shy, nervous, awkward newbie who had irritated the heck out of Jasper from the first moment. Other days he was gregarious, outgoing, obnoxiously friendly. Today happened to be an obnoxious day. Jasper wasn't quite sure how they'd ended up here, but the kid had wanted to see more of the preserve, and Karlton had been settled into the common area of their dorm with all his homework. His intense concentration always heightened the humidity in the room, and Jasper's irritation heated things up enough to make the tower dorm feel like a sauna. He'd managed not to set any of the furniture ablaze on the way out, and here they were.[/font]
The preserve always made him slightly edgy. It wasn't that he was particularly worried about his physical well-being. Even the crazy homicidal creatures around here were a little put off by their dinner abruptly bursting into flames, and he figured they were all likely to go find more convenient meals. At the same time, you never knew when you'd come across something entirely unlike anything you'd ever seen out here, and there was always that possibility of running into something malicious that didn't mind his tricks with fire. He absently flicked off to the side the fireball that had been twirling on one finger for the past few minutes. There was a tiny shriek as the vampire-moth that had been following them for a while incinerated and drifted away in a little cloud of ashes. Creepy little buggers, those vampire moths. He didn't believe most of the stories he'd heard, but there was enough that was believable for him to want to keep a distance between them and him. He turned back to warn Thomas about the tarantula ferns - they had fangs and a deep disliking for anyone who stepped in them - and almost faceplanted in the moss. He caught himself in time, feeling a surge of irritation singe the surrounding plant life as he turned back to see what had tripped him. Well that is definitely new. Only the sudden burst of flames at his fingertips betrayed the heartstopping shock that passed through him at the sight.
A corpse - a human corpse, as far as he could tell. Mangled, mauled, and strangely bloodless, lying white and cold. It was face-down, but the shorts and tanktop gave it away as a girl.
"Please tell me you didn't know that was there," he grumbled at Thomas, only a slight hint of shock in his voice.

Notes: Meh. It was fast. It was short. Ta-da, it’s a post xD I just sort of repeated whatever I wrote the other day and we can go from there? Yay.
