Lyrics:I wish I could lay down beside you when the day is done
And wake up to your face against the morning sun
But like everything else I’ve ever known, you disappear one day-
So I spend my whole life hiding my heart away
And wake up to your face against the morning sun
But like everything else I’ve ever known, you disappear one day-
So I spend my whole life hiding my heart away

Painting the Portrait:
Appearance:
Chloe looks pretty normal. She has long dark hair that she keeps cut in layers and usually wears down in a brush-and-go sort of style that flatters her more than it seems like it ought to. Her eyes are green, but they’re a dark green that doesn’t stand out in her face. While she’s a pretty girl, she doesn’t really stand out or attract notice. She’s slim and slight, standing only about five-foot-three. Generally she wears shades of black and grey and blue, and she’s partial to funky styles with ruffles and bows and spiky jewelry. She likes combat boots when the profs actually enforce the “shoes at all times” rule - the tend to go in fits and spurts - but she really prefers to be barefoot. Looking normal, though, and being normal are two quite different things. Some days she’s entirely out of the ordinary. She can pass her animagus self off as human as long as nobody’s looking too closely. They usually don’t know what to look for, anyway.
Chloe’s animagus side looks very much like her human side. Being what she is, her appearance changes only very slightly when she goes into her animagus form. Her face grows paler, her skin grows colder, her incisors grow longer, her lips grow redder, and her eyes turn red. It’s classic “hello I’m a vampire” minus the cheesy lines and bats. All the big changes happen on the inside, where her senses of smell, hearing, and sight increase enormously, and where she grows stronger, faster, where the craving for blood begins to haunt her.
Personality:
Chloe is sweet, a little shy, quiet. In general she keeps to herself. Part of this is her natural diffidence; part of it is her fear that anyone she grows to care for may be the next fatality if she looses control of her familiar. She seems a bit haunted, as if she carries a dark secret that gnaws at her heart - which, of course she does; both her father's death and her very essence are terrifying secrets that she cannot let go of. The knowledge of what she is and what she might do - what she has done - eat at her constantly, and in her nightmares she is the monster the world would see in her. Despite this she has a dry sense of humour and tends to get along alright with those around her. Though she has no close friends and few of any sort, she is not disliked; mostly she is overlooked. She is a good student in the classroom, does her homework, doesn't go out for extra curricular activities, and tends to avoid social gatherings.
Her animagus side has a slightly different personality. Mostly her human personality comes through, and she’s quite good at controlling herself, but her animagus side has a deep desire for blood, and little respect for people around her. That side of her tends to be a little harsher, a little more abrupt, a little less inclined to hide what she is and a little more inclined to be derisively amused at the feelings of fear, uncertainty, or horror aroused in the humans that see what she is. Despite that, she’s only lost control of that side once - although she takes pains not to go into that particular mode around other humans, so she’s barely been tested since that first time.
History:
Her past always follows her, taunting her, whispering cruel things in the night. She began shifting when she was six years old; on that first night she killed her father. She was changing back by the time her mother found her, sitting beside her father’s bloodless corpse, the telltale crimson dripping off her chin and staining the carpet around her. She was terrified. Her mother was just as frightened. She immediately handed Chloe over to a children’s mental hospital and relinquished all rights to her. She never lost control again. She learnt the hard way to control the urge to shift into her other self, but she always struck the social workers and doctors as a little off. They were uncomfortable around the strange, quiet child, and she was passed around from one place to another. There were a few treatments attempted, but as none of them knew what was wrong with her, they had no success. Those years are a blur of pain and fear, and she tries to forget them.
She was nine when the taciturn Chalice representative told her to pack her things and took her to the academy. She was, quite understandably, terrified. It took about a year for her to figure out that it wasn’t another mental home full of psychiatrists, social workers, and doctors who wanted to fix her. For the first time she was surrounded by other people who were, if not like her, at least as different from the rest of the world as she was. She had no home to go back to, and became a year-round student. She’ll never admit that her mother’s betrayal still tears her heart to shreds, but it doesn’t matter. She’s put that behind her. Chalice has become home more than anywhere else in the world.
