Ummm... Well how available are shards. Is there just one, or are the pieces randomly scattered across the world? Also after one holds a large shard, can the effects of the shard be broken, and if so how long would it take?

There's tons of them, really. Some are so small there's no power left in them, but there are a considerable amount of larger ones scattered everywhere.
It can be broken, but it will take a long time depending on how long the person was in contact with it. If they had it for a day or something, it might take a few weeks to be fully rid of the shard's influence.
