PaleMoon Ranks:
[/u]Master
PaleMoon's guildmaster is the ultimate power in the guild; he leads in everything and the guild members follow him and are loyal to him. The guildmaster may be male or female and are still called master, as the term is not considered gender-specific in this case. He may retire if he wants to, but often guildmasters are masters for life. He usually lives in a wooden house in the home territory's central clearing, but the current guildmaster lives in a small house and cave further off in the woods.
Elder
The Elder is the second-in-command, so to speak, in the guild. He is the guildmaster's closest confidant and he carries almost as much responsibility as the master. The Elder is chosen by the guildmaster within the first six months of the master's status. When the master dies or is in some other way incapacitated, the Elder becomes the next master except in rare and extreme cases. The Elder can be dismissed by the guildmaster and in such cases he usually leaves the guild and either joins another guild or becomes an outlander. Usually the Elder lives either with the guildmaster or in a house nearby. In some rare cases the Elder has lived farther away.
SwordMaster:
The SwordMaster is in charge of all the swordsmen in the guild, including reserve warriors and warrior apprentices, and shares responsibility for the messengers with the BowMaster. The SwordMaster collaborates with the BowMaster on all military planning and execution and in oversees every detail of the swordsmen's weapons and the swordsmen themselves. Usually either the SwordMaster or the BowMaster will be appointed as slightly higher rank than the other, so that the military of the guild has a single leader in times of crisis. The SwordMaster may be male or female. The SwordMaster is appointed to his rank by the previous SwordMaster. If he chooses no successor before his death, the guildmaster or Elder may appoint the next SwordMaster. The SwordMaster may retire if he wants to, as long as he has chosen his successor. The SwordMaster lives in the Swordsmen's Lodge in the central clearing.
BowMaster:
The BowMaster is in charge of all the archers in the guild, including reserve warriors and warrior apprentices, and shares responsibility for the messengers with the SwordMaster. The BowMaster collaborates with the SwordMaster on all military planning and execution and in oversees every detail of the archers' weapons and the archers themselves. Usually either the BowMaster or the SwordMaster will be appointed as slightly higher rank than the other, so that the military of the guild has a single leader in times of crisis. The BowMaster may be male or female. The BowMaster is appointed to his rank by the previous BowMaster. If he chooses no successor before his death, the guildmaster or Elder may appoint the next BowMaster. The BowMaster may retire if he wants to, as long as he has chosen his successor. The BowMaster lives in the Archers' Lodge in the central clearing.
Healer:
The Healer is the medic of the guild. They are required to know about plants and cures and other things, as well as having natural healing magic. The healer has a house on the banks of the river and usually maintains a garden there.
Healer's Ward:
The Healer's Ward is the one the Healer is training. They will become the next Healer, and in the meantime they live with the Healer and learn all they can about the plants and herbs and cures and how to use their natural healing magic.
Warriors:
Warriors are divided into two groups - swords and bows. The swords are, obviously, the warriors who primarily fight as swordsmen and the bows are those who primarily fight as archers. Warriors may be either male or female. Many warriors have war magic of some kind. The swords all live with the SwordMaster in the Swordsmen's Lodge in the central clearing and the archers all live with the BowMaster in the Archers' Lodge in the central clearing, across from the swords.
Reserve Warriors:
Reserve warriors are very like warriors in their divisions and fighting, but they are not professional, so to speak. They live normal lives and serve as warriors if more forces are needed. They live in their own homes wherever they please in the guild's home territory and live normal lives unless called.
Warrior Apprentices:
Warrior apprentices are those children who intend to be warriors and are in training to become so. Usually these are children with some form of war magic for whom it would be pointless to pursue another trade, but there are also those who simply choose - or have chosen for them - that they will become warriors. Each warrior apprentice has a specified mentor among the warriors, a sword or a bow respective to what the warrior apprentice aspires to. This mentor will train them individually and is responsible for their wellbeing and their learning everything they will need to know. Warrior apprentices live in houses attatched to the backs of the Lodges, each child at the correct Lodge respective of whether he will be a sword or bow.
Tradesmen:
Tradesmen are those who pursue natural trades such as blacksmithing, carpentry, bakery, butchery, etc. Often they have natural magic for their work but there are always those without. Most tradesmen are male but there are females. They live wherever they please in the guild's home territory.
Apprentices
Apprentices are those children learning a trade under a tradesman. Often they have natural magic but there are those without. They live with the tradesman to whom they are apprenticed and do whatever tasks he sets them to.
Mothers
Any woman with a child is a mother; her task is to feed the child and care for it until it is old enough to be apprenticed in some capacity or other. Mothers live in normal homes, usually with a husband unless he happens to be a warrior, wherever they please in the guild's territory. Mothers are respected above nearly any but healers in PaleMoon guild, because they bring forth life.
Children
Children are any young not old enough to be apprenticed. Obviously, they live at home with their mothers. Every child must be apprenticed in some capacity as soon as they are old enough, whether as the Healer's Ward, a warrior apprentice, or a tradesman.
Gaffers and Gammers:
A gaffer is any man too old to carry on a trade or continue as a warrior; a gammer is any woman too old to bear children or carry a trade or continue as a warrior. If a woman has no trade and is not a warrior or reserve warrior, she is considered a gammer once she passes childbearing age; if she has a trade or is a warrior or reserve warrior, she may not be called a gammer for years after childbearing passes. Gaffers and gammers are extremely respected in the guild and their advice is closely heeded. They are well cared for and any guild member who is not respectful and caring of them can be severely punished.
